I hope that my daughters grow up to study the Hittites, but I will be content if they casually use the word "umbrage."

Yes, it’s a fine word.

In 1944, during the course of the Burma campaign, British troops under Mike Calvert captured the small town of Morgaung from the Japanese.

The American general ‘Vinegar Joe’ Stilwell, who despised the Brits, announced falsely that the town had in fact been captured by his own Chinese forces.

Calvert’s report to his HQ in India put the record straight, and added that not only had British troops taken Morgaung, but they had also now taken umbrage.
