The American general ‘Vinegar Joe’ Stilwell, who despised the Brits, announced falsely that the town had in fact been captured by his own Chinese forces.
Calvert’s report to his HQ in India put the record straight, and added that not only had British troops taken Morgaung, but they had also now taken umbrage.
