James Carroll Beckwith La Tour de Solidor at St. Severin, Normandy (1877)

When that word wears trousers, French-speaking folks use tour in places where Anglophones might employ ‘around’. Thus, while they make a tour d’horizon (‘tour of the horizon’), we take a look around. While we travel around the Continent, they describe our adventure as a grand tour. Similarly, when they ride bicycles around their mother country, they call the event le Tour de France.
