YouTube offers a good deal of content that benefits the autodidact. In some cases, such as that of Luke Ranieri’s Polymathy, the value to the self-directed learner of a given set of videos are hard to miss. In others, such as Elizabeth Filips, the autodidact may make the classic mistake of judging a book by its cover, thereby depriving himself of a useful resource.
At first glance, the component videos of Elizabeth Filips tell tales of the tricks used by an overworked medical student, “cleanly bred, machinely crammed,” to thrive in a demanding academic environment. In other words, it appears to provide instruction in the fine art of being a grind. Upon closer inspection, however, the patient viewer will discover that, notwithstanding her enrollment in medical school, the eponymous hostess of Elizabeth Filips has devoted considerable energy and attention to the art of self-tuition.
Regular readers of Extra Muros will quickly spot places where the techniques described by Miss Filips overlap the methods showcased in this blog. Her technique for sparking interest in a subject with little inherent appeal, for example, resembles the method described in Treat a Topic Like a Movie.
At the same time, much of what I found while watching Elizabeth Filips was entirely new to me. Thus, in all likelihood, readers of Extra Muros who find themselves saying “Please, Sir, may I have more?” will glean much in the way of inspiration, insight, and information from the many videos on that channel that deal with the art of self-directed learning.
